Ignition work makes up a real share of the jobs that come in, alongside keys. After around five years of hands-on auto locksmith work, the pattern is clear: most drivers notice a problem gradually — a key that needs a wiggle, then a second attempt, then a morning where it will not turn at all. The earlier it is looked at, the more options there tend to be. Not every ignition can be repaired at the roadside, and not every fault needs a new unit; the right answer comes from inspecting the key and the barrel first.

Common ignition problems

Key will not turn in the ignition

The most common call. It can be caused by a worn key blade, wafers inside the barrel that have worn or seized, a steering lock that is under load, or damage inside the barrel itself. Gently turning the steering wheel while turning the key sometimes releases a loaded steering lock — if it does not, stop rather than forcing it.

Key becomes stiff or difficult to turn

Stiffness usually builds over months. It may indicate wear between the key and the wafers, dirt or debris in the barrel, or early wear in the steering lock mechanism.

Key gets stuck in the ignition

A key that will not come out may be held by a wafer that has dropped out of position, a barrel that has not returned fully to the off position, or — on automatics — a gearbox not fully in Park.

Worn or damaged ignition barrel

Barrels wear like any mechanical lock. Heavy key rings, high mileage and repeated use with a worn key all add to it, and some barrels are damaged by forced entry attempts.

Key can be removed while the ignition is on

If the key can be pulled out with the ignition switched on, the retaining parts inside the barrel are usually worn. It is a sign the barrel needs attention before it fails completely.

Key turns but the vehicle does not respond

This is where mechanical and electrical problems overlap. It may indicate a fault with the electrical ignition switch, but a flat battery, wiring, the starter motor or an immobiliser that is not recognising the key can all produce similar symptoms. A single symptom is not a diagnosis.

Ignition switch faults

The electrical switch sits behind the mechanical barrel and is a separate part. A worn switch can cause dashboard lights to flicker, the engine to cut out or no response at all, even though the barrel turns freely.

Steering lock or ignition housing problems

On many vehicles the barrel sits inside a steering lock housing. Wear or breakage in that housing can stop the key turning even when the barrel and key are in good order.

Ignition barrel repair versus replacement

A mechanical ignition barrel is a lock: a cylinder containing wafers that line up with the cuts on the key. Where the wear is limited to the wafers or the key, repair may be possible — the barrel is taken out, the worn parts dealt with, and it is refitted to work with a correctly cut key — without replacing the complete assembly.

Where the barrel body, housing or switch is badly worn, cracked or damaged, replacement is the sensible route. Following inspection you will be told which applies and why; repair is not automatically the cheaper option, and some ignition designs cannot be rebuilt at all.

Car and van ignition services

The service covers supported passenger cars and commercial vans. Two groups come up more than any other: the Ford Transit range, where worn and dirt-affected barrels are a regular job on working vans, and Volkswagen Group vehicles — Volkswagen, Audi, SEAT and Škoda — where barrel, steering lock housing and ignition switch faults all occur. Other makes can be enquired about; support depends on the model and the ignition system fitted.

Mobile ignition repair in Eastleigh

The work is mobile: you can ask for an ignition problem to be assessed wherever the vehicle is — a driveway in Eastleigh, a workplace car park, or a street in Chandler's Ford, Bishopstoke or Fair Oak. There is no workshop to bring the vehicle to. See areas covered for the full list.

Frequently asked questions

Why won't my car key turn in the ignition?

It can be caused by a loaded steering lock, a worn key, worn or seized wafers in the barrel, or damage in the steering lock housing. Try gently moving the steering wheel while turning the key; if that does not free it, avoid forcing it and get it looked at.

Can a worn ignition barrel be repaired?

Often, where the wear is in the wafers and the barrel body is sound. If the barrel or housing is damaged, replacement is usually needed. It depends on the vehicle and the condition found on inspection.

Does a faulty ignition always need replacing?

No. Some faults are in the key rather than the ignition, and some barrels can be repaired. Replacement is recommended only when repair is not practical.

Can you repair van ignition barrels?

Yes, for supported vans — the Ford Transit range is a regular one. See van keys for related van key work.

Why does my key turn but nothing happens?

It may indicate an ignition switch fault, but battery, wiring, starter and immobiliser problems can look identical. Checks are needed before anything is replaced.

Can a damaged ignition cause the key to become stuck?

Yes. A wafer out of position or a barrel that will not return to the off position can hold the key in place.

Will I need new keys if my ignition is replaced?

It depends on the vehicle and the repair method. Sometimes the new barrel can be set to your existing key; sometimes a new key is cut to suit it, and on some vehicles key programming is involved. You will be told which applies before work starts.
