Car Key Programming in Eastleigh

A cut key that has not been programmed will open the door and go no further. Modern vehicles check the key electronically before they allow the engine to run, so the new key has to be introduced to the vehicle's own security system using the manufacturer's programming routines. That is done on site with diagnostic equipment carried in the van.

Transponder programming

The transponder is a small chip in the key head. Turn the ignition and the immobiliser sends it a challenge; if the response is not the one it expects, fuel and ignition stay disabled. Programming writes the new key into the list the vehicle recognises. This is needed on effectively every car and van built since the late 1990s.

Remote programming

Central locking, boot release and, on some models, mirror fold and window functions are handled by a separate receiver. A new remote is paired to that receiver so the buttons work from the usual distance. A remote that has simply stopped working is sometimes only out of sync or out of battery, which is a much smaller job.

Smart and proximity keys

Keyless vehicles look for the fob nearby rather than a blade in a barrel. Programming a smart key covers keyless entry, push-button start and the emergency blade inside the fob. Coverage here is more model-dependent than on traditional keys, so the registration matters.

Replacement and spare keys

Programming is included as part of a replacement car key or a spare car key — it is not a separate purchase. It is also charged on its own when you have already bought a key and need it paired to the vehicle, though be aware that cheap online fobs vary in quality and not all of them can be programmed.

Immobiliser communication

Work is carried out through the vehicle's diagnostic port and its documented security routines, with proof of ownership required before any key is programmed. Where the vehicle supports it, keys that are no longer in your possession can be removed from the system at the same time — worth doing after a theft or a house move where a key was never returned.
