Volkswagen Ignition Repair & Replacement in Eastleigh

VW key won't turn? Call 02382 180574

Volkswagen ignition faults are among the most regular ignition jobs we deal with. Stiff barrels, keys that will not turn and keys that turn with no response — on supported versions of the Golf, Polo, Caddy, Transporter, Passat and Tiguan — diagnosed at your vehicle in and around Eastleigh.

There is no single "VW ignition". A Polo from the early 2000s, a current Golf with push-button start and a Transporter van are built differently, and many newer models have no mechanical barrel at all. The registration tells us which arrangement your vehicle has before any work is quoted.

Three parts, three different faults

On a VW with a turn-key ignition, three separate parts do the work:

  1. The mechanical ignition barrel — the lock the key slides into. Its wafers read the cuts on the key and allow it to rotate.
  2. The steering lock housing or mechanism — the casting the barrel sits in, which locks the steering column when the key is out.
  3. The electrical ignition switch — mounted behind the barrel, turned by it, and responsible for powering the ignition and starter circuits.

A stiff or non-turning key can sometimes result from wear or damage in the first two. A key that rotates normally but gets no expected electrical response may indicate a switch fault — but a weak battery, wiring, the starter or the immobiliser not recognising the key can produce the same symptom. That is why one symptom is never treated as the answer.

Volkswagen Ignition Barrel and Steering Lock Problems

The barrel and the steering lock work as a pair. When you turn the key, the barrel turns a cam that pulls the lock bolt away from the steering column. If the housing is worn, or the steering is resting against the lock, the barrel has to fight that load — which feels exactly like a worn barrel from the driver's seat.

So a VW key that will not turn might be a tired barrel, a worn housing, a loaded steering lock, or a worn key. Gently moving the wheel while turning the key rules out the simplest cause. Beyond that, the key, barrel and housing are inspected together. Where the barrel alone is the problem, repair may be possible; where the housing is worn or cracked, that part needs addressing as well.

Supported Volkswagen models

Supported versions of the Golf, Polo, Caddy, Transporter, Passat and Tiguan. The Caddy and Transporter are often working vans, so they tend to share the wear patterns seen on other commercial vehicles — heavier use and keys carried in rough conditions. Support depends on the generation and ignition fitted.

Will my key still work?

It depends on the repair. A repaired barrel may be set to your existing key; a replacement may need a new key cut to match it, and some vehicles involve key programming. You will be told which applies before work starts. For key-only work, see Volkswagen car keys and car key programming.

Volkswagen ignition FAQs

Why is my VW key stiff in the ignition?

It can be caused by barrel wear, a worn key blade, or load from the steering lock. Avoid forcing it — a stressed key can snap in the barrel.

My Golf key turns but nothing happens. Is it the ignition switch?

It may be, but battery, wiring, starter and immobiliser faults look the same. Checks come first.

Can a VW steering lock housing be repaired?

It depends on the model and the damage. Some faults can be dealt with; badly worn or cracked housings usually need replacing.

Do you cover Transporter and Caddy vans?

Yes, for supported versions with a mechanical ignition.
